A quick guide

How to use this tool

  1. Check the example and the unit beside each input.
  2. Enter your values and choose Generate.
  3. Review the result and assumptions, then copy what you need.

Reset example restores the starting values. Clear removes text and number inputs, returns choices to their first valid option, and removes the result.

Reference guide

Explanation and worked examples

Increase nn for each same-day zone revision. The convention helps operators; authoritative and secondary servers ultimately compare serials using DNS serial arithmetic.

Use in day-to-day IT work

Prepare a readable SOA version for a manually managed DNS zone.

Checks before applying the result

  • Compare with the current serial under RFC 1982 arithmetic; YYYYMMDDnn does not guarantee a newer value.
  • Use the provider-managed serial for managed zones. This generator rejects impossible dates and values outside the 32-bit field.
