Which RAID Level?

Answer a few questions to explore a suggested pattern and its trade-offs. Each answer explains why it fits, what you gain and what to check before putting it into practice.

RAID combines disks for capacity, performance or tolerance of disk failures. A separate backup answers a different question: how you recover deleted, corrupted or lost data.

01Your requirements

A separate backup helps recover deleted or damaged data. You will still receive a RAID recommendation if you choose No.
Enter the exact count, from 2 to 128. RAID 10 needs an even number of at least four.
Write performance favours mirrored layouts; capacity efficiency favours parity. Scratch data must be genuinely replaceable.

Suggested pattern

Answer the questions to explore a starting pattern.

Architecture depends on workload, risk, team capability and constraints. Validate assumptions and evaluate a small proof of concept; this is a starting point for your design.

Turn this into a practical decision

  1. Check that your storage system supports the proposed level and disk count.
  2. Use the capacity calculator with the smallest disk size.
  3. Measure performance and rebuild time, and restore a sample from the separate backup.
