RTO / RPO Planner

Check whether estimated recovery time and backup frequency meet recovery targets.

Calculations run in your browser. The tool does not send your inputs to a server.

How to use this tool

  1. Check the example and the unit beside each input.
  2. Enter your values and choose Calculate.
  3. Review the result and assumptions, then copy what you need.

Reset example restores the starting values. Clear removes text and number inputs, returns choices to their first valid option, and removes the result.

Explanation and worked examples

RTO is the time allowed to restore service. RPO is the acceptable period of lost data. A backup interval longer than the RPO misses that target in this model.

Use in day-to-day IT work

Compare a proposed backup and restoration schedule with recovery objectives.

Checks before applying the result

  • The interval estimates worst-case loss only when backups complete successfully and are recoverable. Backup age, job duration and replication lag can worsen it.
  • Measure detection, decision, provisioning, restore, dependency startup and service validation within the recovery time. A successful comparison is not evidence of recoverability.

SLA
A service agreement that defines a target and how it is measured.
RTO
Recovery Time Objective: how quickly service must be restored.
RPO
Recovery Point Objective: how much recent data loss is acceptable.
