Queue vs Direct API Call

Answer a few questions to explore a suggested pattern and its trade-offs. Each answer explains why it fits, what you gain and what to check before putting it into practice.

A direct call couples the caller to the receiver’s response time. A queue holds work until a worker can process it. Queues help with bursts but add operational responsibilities.

01Your requirements

Think about traffic spikes, maintenance and whether the downstream system may be unavailable.
If the user must receive the completed result immediately, a queued response alone may not meet the need.

Suggested pattern

Answer the questions to explore a starting pattern.

Architecture depends on workload, risk, team capability and constraints. Validate assumptions and evaluate a small proof of concept; this is a starting point for your design.

Turn this into a practical decision

  1. Compare arrival rates with sustainable worker capacity.
  2. Define maximum backlog age, retries, duplicate handling and a dead-letter path.
  3. Test downstream failure and recovery without losing or repeating business effects.
